Responsibilities
The Medical Director, Ambulatory Virtual Care, reports to the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Clinical Transformation and is responsible for providing clinical leadership and strategic direction for all ambulatory virtual care initiatives within Ascension's broader clinical transformation portfolio, including synchronous telemedicine, virtual care, and new models of care delivery.
Strategic & Clinical Leadership
- Shape the clinical vision and innovation strategy for ambulatory virtual care, including eConsults, on-demand care, and Connected Primary Care, in alignment with the AVP of Clinical Transformation's vision for virtual care, AI, and new models of care delivery.
- Provide clinical leadership for the development and scaling of new ambulatory care models aligned with system priorities and patient access goals, leveraging digital and AI-driven solutions where appropriate.
- Serve as a key clinical voice and innovation ambassador across primary care, specialty care, and digital channels.
Program Development & Oversight
- Guide the design and implementation of eConsult programs and other asynchronous care models to improve specialty access and reduce unnecessary in-person referrals.
- Lead clinical input and oversight for on-demand care initiatives, including virtual urgent care and same-day primary care services, integrating AI-driven triage and documentation solutions.
- Co-lead the Connected Primary Care initiative, including model design, clinician engagement, and pilot testing, ensuring synergy with broader digital health strategies.
Clinical Integration & Enablement
- Ensure integration of virtual care offerings into ambulatory workflows, EHR systems, and care team operations, optimizing for digital and AI-supported processes.
- Collaborate with operations and technology partners to co-design processes that support clinician efficiency and high-quality care delivery, including the seamless adoption of new digital tools and AI functionalities.
- Work closely with primary care and specialty service line leaders to align innovation efforts with clinical operations, contributing to a unified Connected Care strategy.
Performance & Quality Monitoring
- Define, track, and report clinical metrics to evaluate the quality, access, experience, and cost-effectiveness of ambulatory virtual programs, including the impact of AI-enabled workflows.
- Identify and escalate opportunities for clinical improvement, operational optimization, or expansion.
- Partner with data and analytics teams to develop actionable dashboards and performance insights.
Stakeholder Engagement & Change Leadership
- Engage ambulatory clinicians and clinical leaders through regular communications, training sessions, and feedback loops, fostering adoption of new virtual and AI-supported care models.
- Champion change management and build clinical buy-in for new models of care.
- Serve as the clinical representative in cross-functional workgroups, steering committees, and leadership forums.
Clinical Governance & Risk Management
- Provide clinical oversight for adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards across ambulatory virtual care offerings, including those leveraging AI and new digital modalities.
- Support credentialing, privileging, and clinical governance processes in partnership with medical staff leadership.
- Contribute to vendor assessments and contracting decisions where clinical input is required, particularly for virtual care and AI-enabled solutions.
Plan and direct medical policies and programs. Define and achieve financial targets in support of business goals; evaluate organizational functions and structure to best determine the allocation and utilization of services.
- Facilitate strategic clinical relationships with physicians.
- Work with leadership to develop a strategic plan for growth of clinical practice.
- Ensure that clinical programs are in compliance with governmental and regulatory requirements.
- Implement utilization review and quality improvement systems.
- Implement educational programs and offerings.
- May provide medical services to patients in an assigned area.
- Prepare annual operating budget for assigned service areas.
- Consult with planning and operations leadership in new program development.
- Supervise any assigned medical/resident programs.
Requirements
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
- One or more of the following required:
- Physician MD/DO obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. Licensure required relevant to state in which work is performed.
- Podiatrist obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. Licensure required relevant to state in which work is performed.
Education:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Optometry (OD) or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) required.
