Job Description

Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs is gearing up for an exciting horse racing season and is hiring Seasonal Assistant Saddle Starters to join our team! As an Assistant Saddle Starter, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient conduct of races. This position requires a strong understanding of horse behavior, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively as part of a high-performing team.

NOTE: This position is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. Responsibilities

  • Assist with saddling horses before the start of each race.
  • Ensure the safety of horses and jockeys throughout the starting process.
  • Maintain the starting gate and ensure its proper functioning.
  • Test and maintain the automatic gate system.
  • Ensure horses are positioned correctly in the starting gate.
  • Lead horses to the gate and assist with loading.
  • Calm and reassure anxious horses prior to the start of the race.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1 year of relevant experience in a horse racing environment is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of horse racing and starting procedures.
  • Understanding of horse behavior and handling techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and often demanding environment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an OHRC gaming and/or racing license.
