Job Title: Lake Ranger FLSA:Hourly/Non-Exempt

Department: Parks and Lake Reports to: Director of Parks

Salary: $15.00 - $16.84

General Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the Lake Ranger Supervisor and assists in the planning, supervising, operating and managing Claremore Lake properties and the enforcement of all City and State ordinances and laws relating to lake operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists the Lake Ranger through the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State, City and County laws and ordinances governing fishing, camping, hunting and other lake related activities.
  • Work on assigned shifts performing scheduled security patrols, traffic control and park maintenance.
  • Maintain normal availability by telephone for consultation on matters concerning vandalism, civil disturbances and illegal acts of drugs and alcohol abuse on lake property.
  • Notify Police immediately when any criminal activity or misconduct occurs.
  • Contribute to the planning, development and implementation of recreation projects for the Claremore Lake Park.
  • Participate in administering personnel policies and procedures.
  • Execute policies and procedures ensuring lake security and safety.
  • Perform regular mowing, cleaning and maintenance of public restrooms, lake office, enclosed fishing dock, and boat-house and lake vehicles.
  • Conduct regular pickup and removal of any refuse found on lake property while patrolling, including but not limited to litter, appliances and any other items illegally dumped.
  • Collect fishing and hunting user fees and boat permits. Prepare daily cash receipts reports.
  • Assist the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife with fish and wildlife projects.
  • Attend classes and seminars relating to lake management, park patrol and environmental and wildlife protection.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain departmental equipment, supplies and facilities.
  • Maintains contact with the general public, Community Service Director and other City officials for information pertaining to Claremore Lake Park and the performance of Lake Ranger activities.
  • Maintain department files and records. Prepare various lake activity reports and correspondence.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
  • Demonstrated familiarity of rules and regulations pertaining to fishing, boating, hunting and outdoor recreation.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and two-year community college degree or vocational school training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration or a related field, or an equivalent combination of three (3) years of education and experience in lake patrolling and management. Must be bondable and maintain insurability via City insurance.

Tools and Equipment:
Telephone, mobile; lake vehicles; utility vehicle; patrol boat; Police-type shotgun; first aid equipment; personal computer and word processing, spreadsheet and database software, copy and fax machine, and various maintenance equipment including but not limited to grasshopper-type mower, push lawn mower, weed eater, tractor, loader, chainsaw and various other portable hand tools.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell.
The employee must lift and or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places and occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

Special Requirements
Valid Oklahoma State driver’s license. Demonstrated proficiency in the safe handling and maintenance of department issued shotgun.
