A Brief Summary of This Position
The Shipping Supervisor is responsible for the assigned shipping area including the human and capital assets of the department. Activities include: creating loads, replenishment of inventory, loading of trailers, checking orders, requesting repair work to product, QA inspection requests, preventative maintenance, housekeeping, new-employee orientation as well as various administrative functions including meetings, inventory, production data record keeping, employee annual evaluations, employee attendance records, corrective action warnings all of which must be completed in accordance with established Valmont processes. The Shipping Supervisor is accountable for quality of output and processing in the assigned area. Focus is on providing on time and accurate products/services to internal and external customers. Although most Shipping Supervisors work one established shift, their supervisor duties may extend to two or three operational shifts. The incumbent is held accountable for safety, continuous improvement and lean processing within the area.
Important Details about the Role
This position must maintain an overall acceptable level of performance in meeting the department’s goals and objectives and attain this with a suitable level of harmonious employee relations and within the guidelines of the company. The incumbent may also need to complete master scheduling duties as well as being involved in daily coordinating efforts with other areas in order to meet deadlines. Contact with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Human Resources, Safety, and other areas are necessary to maintain an acceptable level of performance. Shipping Supervisors may also coordinate some of the subcontract activities necessary for the department and/or individual cells. The employee must possess technical and human relations skills necessary to train and motivate both skilled and unskilled workers. He/she must be capable of withstanding the pressures of first line supervision and have the ability to initiate and adapt to change in a timely and orderly manner. It takes about 3 years on the job before a Shipping Supervisor is considered fully-qualified to assume all the following responsibilities:
- Ensure that standard methods are used. Recommend changes in layout, processes or methods to improve operations and lower costs.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of assigned personnel’s time and production counts. .
- Report discrepancies in specifications, methods, engineering data, standards, etc. to the corresponding authority.
- Develop positive relationships with assigned employees to create pride in operations, housekeeping, safety and other accomplishments. Take action to keep equipment and work area clean.
- Promote a participative productivity climate and encourage assigned employees to submit suggestions for improvement on operations. Implement worthwhile ideas and keep employees informed of status. Keep managers advised of employee requests, complaints, and suggestions and provide prompt feedback” to employees.
- Be ultimately responsible for the implantation of shop safety practices.
- Work with HR to keep job descriptions up-to-date and accurate as the job changes in scope and content.
- Determine staffing requirements, interview applicants and on-board new hires
- Attend seminars/short courses on improving the management skills necessary to operate the area according to the expectations established by Valmont
- Ensure that daily and monthly safety and department meetings are held and participate in Lean related activities.
- Promote cell and team development. Ensure that training is provided to appointed team members and leaders.
- Provide mechanisms to track/chart productivity goals and exercise guidance in productivity improvement.
- Remain cognizant of the ever-changing environmental regulations and assure each cell is within compliance. Provide training/information so that there is continuous awareness.
- Maintain records on any first aids, OSHA recordables, lost-time injuries and property damage.
- Control of orders, preventative maintenance, housekeeping and administrative functions
Essential Functions:
- Supervising both direct reporting staff and other team members according to overall company policy.
- Training /cross-training of operators in new operations and methods
- Ensuring quality inspections of products/services produced
- Producing product/service to predetermined schedules or actual demand
- Coach, mentor and motivate workers to attain a higher degrees of performance competency in order to develop staff to maximize potential
- Assist employee set goals and objectives as well as assist staff with work progress
- Monitor staff performance including performance reviews
- Ensure work has been delegated fairly among the team
- Allocate most appropriate use of both material and human resources
- Implement procedures to maximize operating efficiency and reduce potential injuries
- Administration of need-to-know company and division policies
- Lead, facilitate and promote teams to meet the challenge of continuous improvement
- Encourage operators to manage their time better and develop their skills through classes, seminars and workshops
- Work as a change agent for the department. Challenge the status quo to find new and better ways to conduct work through the utilization of lean tools.

Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma and 7+ years of relevant experience or Associates Degree with 5+ years relevant experience or Bachelors with 3+ years of relevant experience
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to support divisional objectives
- The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner
- The ability to recognize and solve practical problems or issues
- The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals
Highly qualified candidates will also possess:
- A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook
- A proven record of supervisory experience and must have strong leadership
- The ability to calculate figures such as pay changes for employees, proportions and percentages, and product dimensions
- Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills

Working Environment and Physical Efforts
Work is typically performed in both an office setting and production / shipping area. On-site presence is mandatory for this position. The incumbent is required to stand, bend, reach, lift and pivot throughout the shift. The environment is fast-paced and demanding most of the time. The temperature range can be from over 100 degrees in the summer to freezing temperatures in the winter. Most employees in production areas may be exposed to some type of disagreeable working conditions (wind, cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, water, or oil). Some outside work may be required. The indoor environment can be noisy with sound levels above 80 decibels in some areas. Safety glasses and metatarsal safety shoes are required at all times in the plant. Some areas require ear protection and safety hats. The employee may operate or be around machines that use liquid coolants and may also be exposed to cast iron dust. Travel to other sites within the U. S. is infrequent although may be required for business purposes. The functions of this job require both physical and mental stamina, especially during the busy times of the year as the environment is often fast-paced. The Shipping Supervisor must be in physical condition that allows for the manager to actually show and train the subordinates how to do the work properly. There are often high stress situations where the supervisor is called during odd hours. This position sometimes requires intense mental and visual concentration. The supervisor has to have the ability to make good judgment calls that comply with the mission and goals of the organization. On a visual level, the employee must demonstrate acceptable vision by passing a visual exam and have the ability to read text from manuals, schematics, labels, and other printed materials that can be as small as 1/16th of an inch in size. Adequate hearing is required to help diagnose problems with machines and equipment. Mental and visual concentration is needed to prevent injury to oneself, fellow workers and/or damage to the product. The use of any equipment or tools requires the employee to be alert at all times.
