Job Description
Night Shift 5pm - 3:30am Monday - Thursday
A Sub arc Seamer/Back welder is responsible for setting up and operating automated Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) equipment to create longitudinal or circumferential seams on large metal components, such as pipe, pole shafts, or structural steel, followed by applying back-welds to ensure full penetration and structural integrity. These roles focus on high-production, quality-sensitive environments, requiring proficiency with automated systems and often involving crane operation and heavy fabrication Core Responsibilities
A Sub arc Seamer/Back welder is responsible for setting up and operating automated Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) equipment to create longitudinal or circumferential seams on large metal components, such as pipe, pole shafts, or structural steel, followed by applying back-welds to ensure full penetration and structural integrity. These roles focus on high-production, quality-sensitive environments, requiring proficiency with automated systems and often involving crane operation and heavy fabrication Core Responsibilities
- Machine Setup and Operation: Set up and operate automatic sub-arc welders, including adjusting wire feed, voltage, current, and speed.
- Seam Welding: Perform continuous longitudinal or circular (girth) welds on large steel components.
- Back-Welding/Repair: Operate a sub-arc back-welder (or "turtle") to weld the opposite side of the seam, ensuring at least 80% to 100% penetration and passing ultrasonic (UT) inspection.
- Material Preparation: Align, clamp, and prep workpieces (grinding, air-arcing) before and after welding.
- Quality Inspection: Visually inspect welds and check against blueprints/WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications) to ensure compliance with standards.
- Material Handling: Utilize overhead cranes to position large structural components.
- Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Previous experience with submerged arc welding or automated welding systems.
- Technical Skills: Ability to read blue prints, shop drawings, and technical welding symbols.
- Certification: Often requires AWS (American Welding Society) SAW certification, or the ability to pass it within a set timeframe.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate settings and interpret measurements.
